Metro riders coping with extreme heat as they wait for buses

Metro's summer closure of stations has riders outside waiting for buses.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — If you have to be outside, it's tough to avoid the the dangerous heat. And this summer, with many Metrorail stations in Virginia closed, lots of folks are having to figure out how to stay safe while waiting for buses.

Dangerously hot. Which means you've got to be prepared.

"Yeah, it's hot," said one young father taking his toddler to a doctor's visit. "As long as I stay hydrated, I'm fine."

Carol Sullivan joked, "I don't like it, when we grew up we didn't even have air conditioning, I don't know how I live through it!"

The six stations south of Reagan National Airport are all closed for track work through Sept. 8, meaning the Blue and Yellow lines in Virginia are the lines impacted.

Shuttle buses are picking up riders every 10 minutes at the Huntington station. But even that short wait in the heat can be hot.

"I have my water, or either I just stay under the little bus demo and not out here in the heat. Because it's definitely too hot to be standing out here," said Cheryl Moir.

"We got off early because of the heat," said Jonathon, who works in construction. "Hydrating. Plenty of water, plenty of  fluids."  He's headed "Home, to the AC!"

That's a good idea. Getting out of the heat, is the best way to avoid heat exhaustion.
