VIENNA, Va. —

This 17-year-old boy walked from Virginia to Maryland for a special cause.

Around 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Alex Covell and his friends set out on a journey to travel from Vienna, Va., to Baltimore, Md.

Covell says their goal is to raise money for Team World Vision, a non-profit organization that provides access to clean water to children and their families in Africa.

According to Covell, the average person in a developing country walks about 3.7 miles to get water that might not even be clean.

"It really is helping us identify with their journey," Covell says about the group's decision to take the 50-mile walk.

As of Saturday night, the team surpassed their $5,000 goal raising more than $7,300.

According to their website, Team World Vision claims to provide clean water to a new person every 10 seconds. In 2018, the organization helped more than 3 million people across the globe.
