FREDERICK, Md. — A 17-year old Brunswick High School student was the victim of a shooting at the Country Inn and Suites hotel in Frederick County Maryland early Friday.
Malakai Tyrell Cooke died in the shooting which occurred in the parking lot of the hotel, according to investigators.
He was a student at Brunswick High School in Frederick County, according to a statement from school officials.
Sheriff's deputies in Frederick say the shooting happened around 2 a.m. in the 5500 block of Spectrum Drive. Deputies responding to a call of shots fired found Cooke dead in the parking lot of the Country Inn & Suites.
Frederick County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Todd Wivell told WUSA9 that deputies cordoned off the area in an unsuccessful search for a shooter. No arrests have been announced.
Wivell said security video from the hotel and other nearby businesses including the nearby Francis Scott Key Mall is being reviewed by investigators.
Grieving friends left flowers at the shooting scene Friday.
The mother of one teen said Cooke was a charismatic individual whose humor drew people to him.
A friend said Cooke had been considering a military career involving mechanical engineering.
