BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- The man who was fatally shot in the Montgomery Mall parking lot Friday died trying to help another victim in the shooting.

Police say Malcom Winffel died at the hospital after he and three others were allegedly shot by a suspect in the Montgomery County shootings.

If you knew Malcom, you called him Mike.

Winffel's family says they will remember him as a hero. They say he was a kind man. His sister, Pilar Winffel, says if someone needed help, they asked Mike.

"He knew how to do everything, he could fix a car, painting, molding, fix a tv, you know, everything," she said. "[Even if it was] a friend of a friend of a friend and he would help."

Police say Winffel was shot and killed at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda when the suspect, 62-year-old Eulalio Tordil, allegedly attempted to carjack a woman. Winffel and another man came to her aid and were allegedly shot by Tordil.

Mike's brother Carlos Winffel was actually at Montgomery Mall with his daughter when he found out.

"I told her and she just screamed," he said. "It was just so crazy."

Tordil then allegedly attempted another carjacking in the parking lot of an Aspen Hill grocery store, killing a woman.

He was taken into police custody Friday afternoon in Aspen Hill, three hours after the shooting rampage began.

Winffel leaves behind a wife and two children. He was active member in his church, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help cover the cost of his funeral funds.

A candle light vigil was held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Clarksburg High School where his daughters attend school.

It's still crazy to the scores of people who showed up to remember Mike at a vigil.

Remembering him is the easy part, watching his family was the hard part. A wife, kids, brothers, sisters in tears, while a mother trying to hold it together.

While this family has lost so much in just one man, he left them with so much.
