WASHINGTON -- Sesame Street's Count von Count and Big Bird joined D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and children at Martha's Table to address the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and eating habits.
Sesame Street is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a nationwide road trip, stopping at various locations to celebrate the program and help kids grow.
"Washington, D.C., is happy to celebrate this historic milestone with our friends at Sesame Street," Bowser said. "Just as they have done for children and families around the world, for 50 years, Sesame Street has been teaching young Washingtonians about joy, kindness, and the importance of community and helping us build a more inquisitive and inclusive D.C."
Children learned about fruits and vegetables with their favorite Sesame Street characters, making smoothies and playing fruit matching games.
Sesame Street also filmed a new segment for the show's 50th season that shares what local kids love about their community in D.C.
In order to recognize Sesame Street's commitment to early childhood learning, Bowser issued an official proclamation to remember Friday, June 7 as "Sesame Street Day."
Sesame Street on Saturday will host a sold-out family festival and stage show at KIPP DC College Preparatory. The event includes a cookies-and-milk snack station, a giant maze, live performances from Elmo and more. Only those with ticketed time slots will be admitted.
