DC Mayor's budget proposal looks to eliminate diaper tax

Her office estimates it would cost the city $4.5 million to eliminate that retail sales tax.

WASHINGTON — D.C. parents could save some money in the future under a new budget proposal from Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Bowser presented an outline of her Fiscal Year 2020 Budget at the Wilson Building Tuesday morning.

Part of her budget proposes repealing the sales tax on diapers in the city. Her office estimates it would cost the city $4.5 million to eliminate that retail sales tax.

"We will eliminate the tax on diapers, which is part of a bill (D.C. Council) passed unanimously last year," she said. "The first part of it was on menstrual products, which we funded last year. The second, we complete funding for, is the tax on diapers."

The repeal would apply to taxes on both adult and infant diapers.

Bowser's budget also proposes a $5 million increase in child care assistance to help families find affordable care.
