TIMELINE: Here's when snow fell in the DMV during the season's first snowfall

A strengthening nor'easter brought a wintry mix to parts of the DMV Thursday & Thursday night. This is what you needed to know about timing, what will fall, and impacts. Several schools in the area were closed or delayed their opening Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for most of the DC-area until 1 p.m. A winter storm warning was also issued for the mountains.

Overview of Timing -- What Will Fall

Sleet and snow fell over the Metro. Snow was reported as far south as Waldorf. There was some accumulation on cars and grassy surfaces. It was be slippery in a few spots. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain continued to fall across parts of the area.

After 12 PM we started to see the transition to rain across DC, but wintry weather was still at play until late afternoon for areas north and west of DC. The wintry mix and accumulating snow lasted for the majority or entire day in our western zones -- from Frederick to Winchester and points northwest, including Martinsburg, Cumberland and Hagerstown where freezing rain was also be a problem.

The DC metro transitioned into a cold rain between 10 AM and 1 PM.

The wintry mix lasted the majority of the day Thursday along/west of the Blue Ridge and I-81.

Thursday 10 AM - 1 PM: Transition To A Cold Rain

Thursday 2 PM - 8 PM: Cold, Soaking Rain. Locally heavy.

Thursday Night: Lingering Lighter Showers, A Few Wet Flakes mix in

Snow/Sleet Accumulations: Light slushy sleet/snow on grass... None to 2" (Highest NW of town), compacting/melting when it changes to rain

Road Conditions: NW side of town could briefly have some slick spots. Roads will be otherwise wet. Standing/ponding water in the afternoon.

Frederick To Winchester and West

Thursday Afternoon: Wintry Mix of snow, sleet & freezing rain

Thursday night: Lighter rain/snow mixed showers. Highest elevations: up-slope accumulating snow.

Snow/Sleet Accumulations: Highest west of I-81 corridor. 3" to 6" on grassy, elevated surfaces, less on roadways. 6" - 10" will fall from Cumberland to Oakland. More sleet would cut down on these.

Additional glazing to 0.25" ice possible.

Road Conditions: Slick and/or snow-covered all day. Avoid traveling Thursday & Thursday Night.

Southern Maryland, southern I-95 region near Fredericksburg

Thursday Afternoon: Cold rain. Heavy At Times.

Thursday Night: Lighter rain showers, tapering off late.

Snow/Sleet Accumulations: 1" or less.

Road Conditions: Wet, Standing/Ponding Water.
