Here's why the Nats opening day forecast will favor fewer home runs than later in the season

It all has to do with the physics of a baseball traveling through hot vs. cold air

WASHINGTON — Baseball is back! And the forecast for the Nationals game couldn't look better for National fans hoping for the first curly W of the year.

But you may be surprised that for maximum home run potential, this is NOT the best baseball weather!

Cool air is more dense. The molecules are more densely packed together. A hard hit ball won't travel as far.

Warm and humid air, on the other hand, is less dense. The molecules are spaced further apart. On a hot and humid summer's evening, that fly ball will travel much further and will have a greater chance of making past the end of the outfield and become a home run!
