Possible tornado tears through town just south of Annapolis

Damaging storms rolled through the DMV region on Thursday evening.

WASHINGTON — Multiple tornado warnings and severe thunderstorms plowed through the DMV Thursday, causing power outages, flash flooding and downed trees in several parts of the DMV.

Between PEPCO and Dominion Energy, as many as 14,000 customers were without electricity due to the storms crossing through DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Reports of damage were widespread across the area, with wind speeds over 50 mph.

In Anne Arundel County, an NWS-spotter saw a tornado just southwest of Annapolis, moving at 35 mph. The storm brought down power lines and damaged property of homes in the area.

Shortly after the tornado moved through Edgewater, neighbors surveyed the damage outside their homes.

Liz McCleskey, who has lived in Edgewater for over 20 years, saw her own backyard get hit and found multiple trees down.

"It was apocalyptic. It was scary," said Liz McCleskey, who had debris scattered about her yard on Thursday evening. "My backyard is bedlam. Three trees came down. It’s a mess.”

McCleskey said the storm quickly turned dangerous as she and her boyfriend were inside their home.

"My boyfriend said we got to get to cover and I said, 'No, we’ve got to eat dinner.' I was the silly one," she said. "We’re used to seeing this hit other people. We were very fortunate. God was with us.”

The storm ripped siding off some homes while others saw widows get shattered as heavy rain and high winds moved through Edgewater

In other parts, like historic downtown Annapolis, flooded streets caused a mess for drivers.

After much of the rain had died down, McCleskey told WUSA9 she was grateful that things didn't turn out worse.

"I just thank God we’re all okay," she said. "My neighbors and my dog are all fine.”

While most watches and warnings have been dropped, the several inches of rain will keep residents in some areas on alert until early Friday morning. Prince George's County and Anne Arundel counties are under Flood (Areal) Warning until 1:45 a.m.

In Montgomery County, damaging winds were reported moving through the area. Montgomery County Fire and EMS officials said a tree fell on a house in the 1900 block of Carmody Drive in Glenmont.

Just before 5:30 p.m., Fire and EMS officials were dispatched to a water rescue also in Glenmont where a vehicle was stuck in high water at the intersection of Randolph Road and Lindell Street.

Over in Damascus, several lanes were blocked at Veirs Mill Road and Reedie Drive & Georgia Avenue for reports of another water rescue.

WUSA9 will continue to report on the damage caused by storms on Thursday that impacted communities across DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Massive amounts of lightning popped up across the district.
