FAIRFAX, Va. — A loud boom heard from miles away in Virginia may have been linked to lightning striking a building in Fairfax County, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
It still remains unclear, but it was a coincidence moments after the loud noise Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched around 11 a.m. to a building struck by lightning in the 13000 block of Woodland Park Road.
"Heard the loud boom? Can’t totally confirm this is related but at approximately 10:59 AM, units were dispatched to [a] building struck by lightning," Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said in a tweet.
There was no significant damage to the building, but crews report that two people suffered minor injuries following the strike. According to fire officials, the lightning protection system did its job and saved the building.
Many residents across the DMV reported hearing a loud boom noise. Some people compared the noise to dynamite, an explosion or a possible meteor. One man said on Twitter that it shook his whole house.
