LIVE BLOG: Snow is over, freezing rain lingers north and west through the afternoon

North of town remains under a winter storm warning until 10 p.m.

WASHINGTON — A winter storm continues to impact the area and bring mostly freezing rain to the DMV. Most of the accumulating snow is over and there has been a shift from snow to a wintry mix with more sleet.

Snow arrived in the D.C. metro area early Wednesday morning. Several schools and federal offices closed ahead of Wednesday's winter weather event. Drivers were advised to stay off the road.

Here's an overview of the timing of the snow and amounts to expect:

  • Snow mixes and then changes to sleet and freezing rain between 12 p.m. -  4 p.m.
  • Mix changes to all rain after 4 p.m., could linger as freezing rain all evening north and northwest of D.C.
  • Snow and sleet totals will be 1 to 3 inches in the D.C. metro, with 3 to 5+ inches northwest of the metro.
  • Ice totals along Interstate 81 could approach or exceed 1/4 of an inch, leading to power outages.
