RIVERDALE PARK, Md. —
Two new playgrounds are under construction in Prince Georges County at Riverdale Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation partnered with the non-profit Kaboom and the Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation to make these new playgrounds possible.
Claire Worshtil, the Capitol Budget Planner at Maryland National Capitol Park and Planning Commission, spoke to WUSA9 about what these new playgrounds will feature.
“This playground is over 20 years old, has been well used well loved and it was time for a new one. So, we are installing a playground for ages two to five and then five to 12 on [one] side and also a ninja course across the trail for the older kids and the adults to enjoy as well,” said Worshtil.
There will be exercise equipment for adults to use too!
The Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation (MSEF) not only made a monetary donation to the playground but also brought out a group of volunteers to help with the construction. Liz Wodatch Pace, an MSEF representative, wants to encourage fans to pitch in on this project!
“The monumental sports and entertainment foundation is really excited to be able to help make this playground a reality this is the second kaboom playground we've partnered with MNCPPC on and it's really great to be able to have our staff come out and participate, invite our fans to come out and volunteer and just really make this dream a reality,” said Wodatch Pace.
So how were these playgrounds designed? By the kids!
Kids drew pictures of what their dream playground looked like and with the help of Kaboom, the drawings came to life!
“Getting to work with the kids and seeing what their dream playground looks like and then getting to actually pick those pieces from their designs and then see it built here today that's probably the most fun part of the whole process,” said, Worshtil.
The playgrounds will be finished by Thursday, May 25, and should be ready for kids to enjoy in the coming weeks. Volunteers are still needed to build the playgrounds. You can click HERE to RSVP, or you can just show up at Riverdale Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Thursday. Lunch and materials are provided.
