WASHINGTON — The D.C. metro area could see some power outages throughout the day as freezing rain, sleet and snow continues to come down.
Freezing rain totals could near or exceed a quarter of an inch along I-81 and points west causing some power outages.
The snow started off light at first, however picked up as the morning progressed. Sleet and freezing rain started to come down in the area somewhere around noon and will continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening in some areas.
Sleet, freezing rain, ice and snow are common power-related interruptions.
In case of a power outage, here's what you should do, according to ready.gov:
- Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.
Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.
If safe, go to an alternate location for heat or cooling.
Check on neighbors.
