WASHINGTON — A significant winter storm will impact the DC area Wednesday, arriving between 4 AM and 8 AM as the morning commute gets underway. Snow could be moderate to heavy at times throughout the morning. A wintry mix follows the snow in the afternoon, making travel even more difficult.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for D.C. Metro from Wednesday 1 AM until 7 PM. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for some of our southeastern counties -- including southern Maryland and into the northern neck. App users click here to view.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy & cold. High: 44.

Wednesday: Cold with Snow to a PM Mix, PM Rain S & E. High: 33.
We're bracing for a big winter storm Wednesday that will start as snow and end as a wintry mix and rain. Snow could be moderate to heavy at times throughout the morning. In the afternoon, it will transition from snow to a wintry mix with sleet and freezing rain. DC will transition to a cold rain by 6 PM Wednesday, but the icing and freezing rain will last into the evening along the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.
Snow will start between 4 AM and 8 AM. The transition to snow to mix will start around noon for most areas.
ICE - The Other Threat That Shouldn't Be Ignored
The wintry mix in the afternoon includes sleet and freezing rain. Freezing rain may cause ice to accumulate on sidewalks, roads, trees and power lines causing power outages and trees to fall. The northern suburbs could see up to .10" of ice and some spots up to .20" of ice or more. A light glazing is expected around D.C.
