Tuesday is the last day of the deep freeze. Some areas will spend a consecutive 70 hours or more at or below freezing.
DC fell to the freezing mark at 5 PM Sunday, January 20th. With a forecast high of 32° Tuesday, we are not predicting DC to climb back above freezing until 10 AM Wednesday. This will be 65 consecutive hours. It's even longer for Frederick Leesburg, and many other cities northwest of town.
Tuesday will be mostly sunny and still very cold with highs at or below freezing for *most* areas. A few spots may briefly climb just above freezing south of town.
Mid-week, the pattern changes. We'll track the next low pressure system and cold front in from the west. This will open the door for some milder temps and take everyone out of the deep freeze into the 40s. This warm-up will also come with rain & showers.
Wednesday starts *mostly* dry, but scattered showers return for the afternoon. Rain & showers build in during the evening and overnight. The heaviest rain will fall Thursday morning, which will lead to a slow AM commute with ponding/standing water. The heaviest rain is over by mid-day with showers lingering for Thursday afternoon along with falling temps into the 30s. The rain showers may end with a few snow showers mixed in for communities far northwest of DC, including Frederick, Hagerstown, Martinsburg and the mountains. A slushy coating of accumulation would be the max, as most of the moisture is gone when temps fall cold enough to mix with snow.
