FORECAST DISCUSSION:

Tuesday will be mostly sunny and still very cold with highs at or below freezing for *most* areas. A few spots may briefly climb just above freezing south of town.

The Arctic Freeze holds tight of the Mid-Atlantic and DC area for another day. Some areas could spend a consecutive 70 hours or more at or below freezing.

DC fell to the freezing mark at 5 PM Sunday, January 20th. With a forecast high of 32° Tuesday, we are not predicting DC to climb back above freezing until 10 AM Wednesday. This will be 65 consecutive hours. It's even longer for Frederick Leesburg, and many other cities northwest of town.

Continue to dress warmly in layers, limiting the amount of exposed skin. Check on elderly neighbors. Give you pets a warm place to stay. And if you see anyone outside who is homeless, please call and help find them shelter. In DC, you can do this by calling 3-1-1. 

For your house, to prevent frozen pipes, open cabinet doors and leave a slow drop in the faucets.

Mid-week, the pattern changes. We'll track the next low pressure system and cold front in from the west. Temps will warm ahead of it into the 40s. Showers become more numerous late on Wednesday. The rain continues Wednesday night and into early Thursday, which could be heavy at times.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with some late day showers and light rain. Most of the day in the 30s to low 40s. Highs: 44 - 49. Winds: S 10 - 15.

EXTENDED FORECAST

Thursday starts mild, but temperatures come crashing down late in the day from around 50 into the 40s and then 30s. There will be rain in the morning, which could be locally heavy. As the colder air rushes in, the rain could end as a mix, mostly west of the metro area in the mountains. It stays cold into the weekend.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with rain likely, locally heavy early. Turning colder late day, some mixing with snow possible far west. Highs in the upper 40s.
Friday: Partly cloudy and cold. Mountain snow showers. Highs in the low 30s.
Saturday: Partly cloudy and cold. Highs in the mid 30s.
Sunday: Partly cloudy and chilly. Highs upper 30s to low 40s.
