WASHINGTON — After more than nine years in business, Little Red Fox will close its café, bakery and market in Upper Northwest Washington by the end of the month.

Little Red Fox, and its sister store, Sugar Fox, will both close their doors on Dec. 23.

In a statement posted to Instagram, owners Matt and Jena Carr said the decision is a personal one.

“In order to address complicated health issues and prioritize the well-being of our family, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to close,” they wrote.

Matt and Jena Carr originally opened the business in 2013, while in their late 20s, with the dream of bringing the casual food they loved eating in Portland to D.C.

The Carrs said, "We were a bit naïve and absolutely made way too many different things from scratch in too small of a space: a bakery, coffee shop, prepared foods market, grocer, and sandwich shop that made its own hot sauce, pickles, apple butter, smoked aioli, pastries, and pies. We were even a butcher shop those first few years!"

Adding, "It was an absolutely wild ride in the beginning, as we learned every lesson about running a small and incredibly busy food service business as we went. But I like to think that keeping all of those different plates spinning in the air (and seeing a few crash and shatter on the ground) is what endeared us to so many regulars that have made us a daily part of their lives these past nine years."

Residents in the area are invited to visit the café and market in D.C. for one last hurrah as the Carrs continue serving up neighborhood favorites until closing day.
