More trains, shorter wait times for Red Line travelers

Starting Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Red Line trains will arrive every eight minutes all day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

WASHINGTON — Travelers will see additional trains and lower wait times on Metro Red Line trains during the busiest days of the week.

Starting Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Red Line trains will arrive every eight minutes all day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority says those specific days the agency sees the highest ridership as the D.C. region recovers from the pandemic.

Red Line trains will continue to operate every eight minutes during the morning and evening rush, and every 10 minutes during all other times up until 9 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

Earlier this month, Metro also increased services for the Blue and Orange Lines as a part of its plan to expand service improvements for trains and customers.

“The combined improvements provide customers with better, more frequent service throughout the system with 70% of all mid-week rush hour trips served by a train every eight minutes or less,” WMATA said in a press release. With this plan, travelers are expected to spend less time waiting for trains and see reduce in crowds.

Metro also shared that they are gradually returning 7000-series trains to service by undergoing hiring and training processes to fill a shortage caused by the pandemic.
