Lanes blocked, one person trapped after dump truck crash on Route 27

DAMASCUS, Va. — Lanes are blocked along Route 27 in Damascus after a two-vehicle crash involving a dump truck and a pick-up truck Thursday morning, Montgomery County Fire officials said.

The collision happened between Ridge Road and Bloom Drive just north of Sweepstakes Drive, officials said

The driver of the dump truck fled the scene following the crash, officials said. Police said they were called to an area near the crash for an injured person in the woods. K-9 units were at the scene searching for the driver in a wooded area nearby.

Moments later, the driver was seen through chopper footage taken out of the woods on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance for transport.

The driver in the pick-up truck was trapped in his vehicle and Montgomery County Fire and emergency crews worked to extricate the individual, police said. Crews are at the scene evaluating serious injuries.

There is also a reported fuel spill on the road as a result of the crash.

Route 27 is closed in both directions as of 9 a.m. A detour has been made available on Ridge Road at Oak Drive to bypass the crash and back-up.
