Major delays at I-66, I-495 interchange after overturned truck loses load

Debris from the overturned truck punctured the fuel tank of another truck, causing it to be disabled on the ramp from Inner Loop to Interstate 66.

DUNN LORING, Va. — There are major backups at the interchange of Interstates 66 and 495 after a tractor-trailer carrying metal debris overturned on the roadway and spilled over to another ramp Wednesday morning, Virginia Department of Transportation said.

The truck overturned around 3:45 a.m. on eastbound I-66 ramp to northbound I-495, officials said.

The eastbound I-66 ramp to northbound I-495 is partially opened after it closed through the morning rush hour.

The debris from the truck also spilled below onto the northbound I-495 ramp to I-66 puncturing another truck's saddle tank and causing it to be disabled, officials said.

Hazmat and clean up crews were called to the scene to clear up the roadways.

VDOT officials are asking drivers to seek alternate routes and to expect possible delays throughout the morning.
