WASHINGTON — For more than 50 years, April 22 has been designated as "Earth Day," marking the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement in 1970. If you're looking for a way to celebrate, WUSA9 has a few suggested events.
FRIDAY
1. Potomac River Clean-Up
When: 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Where: 3400 Bryan Point Road Accokeek, Maryland
Help take a stand against trash piling up along the shoreline by cleaning up the Pumpkin Ash Trail. Volunteers will help collect trash, record data about the collection, and sort recyclables. All ages are welcome but you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entirety of the event.

2. The Smithsonian: Earth Days @ FUTURES: A Sustainability Celebration
When: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Where: 900 Jefferson Drive SW
This sustainability celebration will shed light on how we can meet the needs of our ecosystem today, tomorrow and in the future. The event will feature pop-up seed stands and book swaps in additional expert talks on how we can protect our plant.
The event will continue over the weekend Saturday and Sunday from 10:00a.m.to 4 p.m.

3. The Wharf Water Cleanup
When: 5:00 PM - 7:00 p.m.
Where: Recreation Pier at The Wharf - 1001 7th Street SW
Help collect trash from the waterways on the water. Participants will go out on kayaks from the Wharf Boathouse on Recreation Pier to help clean up. Registration is $10 per person and all proceeds will go to local waterway preservation organizations.

4. U.S. Botanic Garden - Children's Garden Reopening
When: 10:00 AM - 5:00 p.m.
Where: 100 Maryland Avenue SW
As of April 1, the Conservatory and all outdoor gardens of the U.S. Botanic Garden have reopened to the public. And on Earth Day, the Children's Garden will reopen as well.

5. Weed Warrior Workday
When: 9:00 AM - 11:00 a.m.
Where: Long Branch Stream Valley - 8800 Garland Avenue Silver Spring, Maryland
Help save the stream valley ecosystem, as the Weed Warriors will focus on non-native, invasive plant removal including bush honeysuckle and garlic mustard.

6. Earth Day Student Art Gallery
When: 8:00 AM - 5:00 p.m.
Where: Vola Lawson Lobby at City Hall - 301 King Street Alexandria, Virginia
Check out the student gallery to see how young artists in Alexandria have interpreted the 2022 Early Day theme, "Invest in Our Planet." Submissions will remain on display through April 30.

7. "Trashy: A Zero Waste Film" Screening at the Torpedo Factory Art Center
When: 6:00 PM - 9:00 p.m.
Where: 201 N. Union Street Alexandria, Virginia
Check out the advance screening of this feature documentary that follows the director of the film over the course of a year, as she attempts to not throw anything away. Tickets are free.

8. Earth Day at Monocacy Battlefield
When: 9:00 AM - Noon (both Friday and Saturday)
Where: Monocacy National Battlefield Visitor Center - 5201 Urbana Pike Frederick, Maryland
Join a park ranger to learn how native plant gardens help the environment. You'll then learn how to create your own. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty in the park's native garden.

9. Young Professionals Earth Day Clean Up
When: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Where: Rockwater Park - 457 Madison Road Culpepper, Virginia
Join the Culpepper Young Professionals for an Earth Day clean-up. Water, snacks, gloves and trash bags will be provided. But you are encouraged to bring your own gloves if you have them.

10. Anacostia Watershed Society's 2022 Earth Day Cleanup
When: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

11. Potomac River Cleanup at Theodore Roosevelt Island, D.C

Join Potomac Conservancy for Earth Day Service at Theodore Roosevelt Island on April 23rd, a day of preventing litter from entering the Potomac so the nation's river can remain beautiful, drinkable, and fishable! Event details.
12. Earth Day River Cleanup At Oxon Cove
When: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Where: DC volunteers will check in at the entrance of Oxon Hill Farm Trail on DC Village Lane, SW. Maryland Volunteers will check in at the Oxon Hill Bike Trail Parking Lot. Volunteer check-in will begin half an hour before the shift.
"We welcome volunteers of all ages to help remove single-use plastics and trash that has accumulated along the shoreline of Oxon Cove and Oxon Run. Please be prepared and dress accordingly. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet and muddy." Event Details.
