Hall of Famer helps bring basketball court to underserved area of the DMV

Nancy Lieberman hopes the Dream Court will provide a safe place for kids to shoot hoops

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman was in Prince George's County to dedicate a brand new basketball court, called a dream court.

Before things got underway, she made a no-look, behind the back basket, delighting the young hoopsters.

Lieberman's charity, Under Armour, the county, and Prince George’s Police Department teamed up to build it in an underserved community so kids have a safe place to shoot hoops, learn sportsmanship and find friendships with law enforcement.

Mom Deborah Vaughn-Gaines says the courts are good for the community, “Because we need to foster a relationship between the police and the children because the climate in the nation now isn’t really good with our children being killed even when they’re unarmed.”

Lieberman added, “Sports is the great equalizer. It doesn’t matter if you’re white or black or girl or boy or young or old, but when you’re on the court and you’re on my team, we’re called teammates.”

Lieberman was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1996, is a former NBA assistant coach, and in 2018 became the first female head coach of a men's professional team in the Big 3 league.

Her team, the Power, won it all in 2018.
