VERIFY: Is there a limit on how many candidates a party can have?

There's no shortage of Democrats running for President -- more than two-dozen people are hoping to replace President Trump.

WASHINGTON -- Leading up to the 2020 election, there might be information online you're just not sure about. That's where the Verify team comes in -- to track down the answers.

One viewer asked the Verify team, is there a limit of how many candidates a party can have?

To get answers, our Verify squad spoke to Jason Husser, associate professor and director of the Elon Poll, and John Dinan, a politics and international affairs professor at Wake Forest University.

They said no, there isn't a legal cap on the number of candidates who can run for a party's nomination.

We then checked with the Federal Election Commission. As of April 29, over 600 candidates have filed paperwork for presidential campaigns.

Anyone who raises or spends more than $5,000 in contributions or campaign spending for their presidential run is required to register.

So we verified there is no legal cap on number of candidates who can compete for a party's nomination, but the parties can set rules for how many candidates can appear in debates, as part of the nomination process.

Dinan told Verify researchers the Democratic Party has determined that a maximum of 20 candidates can participate in Democratic Party sponsored debates leading up to the 2020 election.

The Democratic Party has set guidelines for what steps Democratic candidates must take to qualify to appear in these debates.
