A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder after police say he fatally stabbed his mother outside a Catholic Church in Rockville.

Kevin Justin McGuigan was charged with first-degree murder of his mother, 49-year-old Jaclyn McGuigan, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

Police said they responded to Saint Raphael Catholic Church located at 1513 Dunster Road in Rockville around 6 p.m. on Friday for the report of an assault.

Officers found Jaclyn McGuigan outside of the entrance to the church with wounds on her upper body that “appeared to be from a cutting type of instrument.” Police said the mother died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

Loved ones described Jaclyn McGuigan as the glue that held their family together.

Witnesses told police they heard loud screaming and saw Jaclyn laying on the ground in front of the church with her son standing over her.

Police said Kevin McGuigan fled the scene in a Honda sedan which police later found abandoned at Fallsgrove Park. Though the sedan was registered to Jaclyn McGuigan, officers found property inside that they believe belonged to her son Kevin.

According to investigators, Jaclyn McGuigan was last seen leaving her home in Marwood Court around 5:30 p.m. in the same vehicle with Kevin on the day she died.

Around 7 a.m. Saturday, Kevin McGuigan was arrested at a gas station in Rockville.
