PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.- The owner of a gun store and range in Port St. Lucie confirmed Monday that Orlando Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen bought weapons from his store that were likely used in the shooting that claimed 50 lives and hurt 53.
"An evil person came in here and legally purchased two firearms from us....he passed a background check that every single person in Florida undergoes to purchase a gun." Ed Henson told reporters.
Henson said agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms visited the store to confirm that the store was in compliance. Hinson temporarily shut his business while ATF was inside but will re-open.
Authorities say Mateen used an AR-15 style weapon and a handgun to shoot more than 100 people at the LGBT-friendly club in downtown Orlando. Henson said Mateen bought the long gun and handgun about a week apart.
“Unfortunately, he is evil, we happened to be the gun store he picked.” Hinson said
Henson says he is a retired New York City police officer who worked at the Twin Towers after the 9/11 attack in 2001. Henson expressed an admiration for the police and first responders working in Orlando.
"We are truly saddened by this terrorist attack." Hinson said.
