A Marlboro woman left her 10-month-old daughter unsupervised in the bathtub “for an unreasonable amount of time,” which “ultimately caused the baby to drown,” Friday, according to state police.

Kayla M. Pagan, 25, was arrested for criminally negligent homicide, state police announced on Sunday.

According to a police press release, an investigation found that Pagan intended to give her child a bath, but “knowingly left the bathroom and baby unsupervised” while the bathtub was filling with water, and the baby drowned at approximately 7:34 p.m.

Upon arriving home from work, the father of the child found the baby and attempted CPR. After being transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, she was pronounced dead, according to police.

The investigation was conducted by state police, Highland BCI, with assistance from the state police Troop F forensic Identification unit, the Town of Marlborough Police Department and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

Pagan was sent to Ulster County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond, after being arraigned in Town of Marlborough Court on Saturday. She is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday.
