Police identify man found dead after 2-alarm fire in Centreville

Residents forced from homes, over a dozen units damaged in deadly early morning apartment fire.

CENTREVILLE, Va. — Fairfax County police have identified the man whose body was found inside an apartment building after a 2-alarm fire in Centreville. 

60-year-old David Zimmers was found dead after the fire ripped through the building, damaging over a dozen units early Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to the 13600 block of Bent Tree Circle around 12:45 a.m. where heavy smoke and flames engulfed the four-story building.

Crews rescued one person who tried to escape before finding the man's body inside. 

Officials said the fire damaged 13 homes and displaced several residents. The Red Cross was on scene to assist them.

Zimmers cause of death will be released pending the results of an autopsy by the Medical Examiner.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
