Woman killed by falling tree branch in Virginia

A 52-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a falling tree in Leesburg Tuesday.

LEESBURG, Va. — A woman has died after a falling tree branch came down on her Tuesday night in Leesburg, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said.

A family member found 52-year-old Melanie Brose around 8:15 p.m. in the 41600 block of Stumptown Rd. in Leesburg. Deputies are still unsure how long Brose had been out there. Crews contacted the sheriff's department when they learned she had life-threatening injuries.

Officials said they believe Brose was clearing fallen branches in the area when a large tree branch fell and hit her.

Brose was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died from her injuries Wednesday morning.

One neighbor was driving home as the scene unfolded Tuesday night.

“It was an eerie feeling with the fog and then the ice, and then as we came over the hill, we could just see all the emergency vehicles at the house….vehicles upon vehicles, and it had to be something really serious going on, and sadly it was," said Lesley Brosick, who lives down the street.

She said there were layers of ice lining all the branches, and she found downed limbs in her front yard Wednesday morning.

“Now that we’ve heard the terrible news, it makes us that much more careful to go out and pick up the branches that we do have in the yard," said Brosick.
