VIRGINIA – Tim Kaine won re-election to keep his seat in the Virginia Senate Race, according to CBS News.

The Democratic incumbent ran up against Republican Corey Stewart. Kaine, in the days leading up to the election, was way ahead of Stewart in the polls.

“Tonight, Virginia showed who we are and who we aren’t,” said Sen. Kaine at his Tuesday night victory party.

However, he was running his campaign like the underdog, spending millions on campaign ads and holding rallies throughout the state.

Kaine knows about upsets. He suffered his first political loss in 2016 as Hillary Clinton’s running mate, even though many polls suggested he’d be the country’s next Vice President.

In this senate race, Kaine ran on the motto, “A Virginia That Works For All,” with an emphasis on healthcare, education, jobs and equality.

His platform was a stark contrast to Stewart’s.

Stewart is currently chair of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and promised to “Take back Virginia,” by pushing President Trump’s agenda in Congress. “Virginia needs a senator who will work with President Trump to get things done,” said Stewart in an online video posted Tuesday morning.

Stewart campaigned on reforming immigration policies and bringing jobs to Virginia, particularly manufacturing.

Virginia went to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and elected Democrat Ralph Northam as governor in 2017.

On Monday, former President Obama surprised voters when he stumped for both Kaine and state Senator Jennifer Wexton, who is running against Congresswoman Barbara Comstock.

Kaine took to Twitter on Tuesday night to thank voters for the win.

This would be Kaine’s second term. Prior to serving in the Senate, Kaine served as governor of Virginia and was U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s pick for Vice President in 2016.
