SWAT officer shoots, kills dog while serving warrant to recover stolen police equipment in Fairfax County

The stolen equipment was recovered and a man was taken into custody.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A dog was fatally shot after a SWAT officer fired their weapon while serving a warrant to recover stolen police equipment in Herndon, Virginia, authorities said.

The incident happened in the 1500 block of Powells Tavern Place early Wednesday morning. Fairfax County police said SWAT officers were serving a search warrant to recover stolen police gear in another jurisdiction.

At least one officer took out their firearm and fired a shot during service, ultimately hitting the dog. Fairfax County police confirmed the dog was declared dead. No other injuries were reported.

The stolen equipment was recovered, and a man was taken into custody.

The Internal Affairs Bureau of the Fairfax County Police Department responded to the scene to conduct and investigation.
