5 displaced, 1 dog dead in McLean house fire

A two-story home caught on fire Wednesday and caused roughly $100k worth of damages, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said.

WASHINGTON — A two-story home in McLean caught on fire Wednesday, taking the life of a dog and displacing five others, according to fire officials.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and the Arlington Fire Department responded to the 6800 block of Old Chesterbrook Road in McLean around 10:44 a.m on Dec.18. A concerned neighbor saw the flames break out and called 911, officials said.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming out of multiple sides of the residence. According to Fairfax Fire, the flames originated in the basement of the two-story home and quickly spread to other levels.

County firefighters said the family dog, who was in the basement when the fire broke out, did not survive. None of the residents were home during the incident, and fire officials said the fire was rapidly contained and extinguished.

Red Cross assistance was offered but declined to the five people who were displaced from the fire. Fairfax County Fire said the fire cost around $100,000 in damages, and it is uncertain if the smoke alarms in the home went off.

It is still unclear what caused the fire to break out on Wednesday, and fire officials are still in the process of investigating.
