Metro Blue/Yellow Line track work causes traffic tie ups in Northern Virginia

WUSA9's Pete Muntean spotted people walking from the airport access road to try and catch their flights at Reagan Airport.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Commuters experienced major traffic delays on Friday due to Metro track work on the Blue/Yellow Line in Northern Virginia.

National Airport and Crystal City Metro stations will be closed for track work throughout the weekend. The combination of heavy rain, the weekend track work and roadwork on the departures level had Jefferson Davis Highway through Crystal City gridlocked on Friday night.

Jefferson Davis Highway through Crystal City was being used by Metro's shutdown shuttle buses.

WUSA9's Pete Muntean spotted people walking from the airport access road to try and catch their flights at Reagan Airport.

The airport tweeted out the following statement around 7 p.m. on Friday:

"Traffic is gridlocked at the airport due to @wmata’s shutdown of 2 stations, including ours. Metro’s free shuttles are also facing long wait times. We apologize for any inconvenience during this regional traffic issue. Passengers should leave extra time coming to the airport."

It took Pete Muntean more than an hour to get to Reagan Airport from the WUSA9 news station in Northwest, D.C., which is about a 7.9 mile drive.
