Maryland man dies after construction accident in Fairfax County

55-year-old Nelson Aguilar-Salamanca was hit by a falling rebar, and taken to a hospital where he died.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A man has died after an accident at a construction site Monday morning, Fairfax County Police said.

Around 7:30 a.m., 55-year-old Nelson Aguilar-Salamanca, of Maryland, was working as a sub-contractor in the 1600 block of Capital One Drive. A rebar that was being lifted by a crane fell and hit Aguilar-Salamanca. 

Aguilar-Salamanca was taken to the hospital after the accident, but later died. There were no other reported injuries related to the accident. 

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. 

Detectives are still investigating the accident and anyone who witnessed the incident should contact the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800.

On Christmas Eve, a worker died after an incident at a job site on Wisconsin Ave.

Officials said they were called to 3900 Wisconsin Ave., Northwest for the report of an accident with entrapment. When they got there they didn't find an accident, but said units were directed on to the construction site where they found a worker in critical condition.

Police said the worker was pinned between the bed and body of a dump truck. The worker has since died. D.C. Police said there's no criminal investigation at this time.

In July, a boy was killed while working at a construction site. He died after getting stuck in a ditch in McLean, Virginia.

Police said another worker, an adult male, was hospitalized after the incident with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said it happened in the 1800 block of Solitaire Lane. They couldn't say how the two became stuck in the ditch and said Major Crimes as well as OSHA were investigating.

Additionally, in June, one person was killed and two others were injured after an accident at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. 

The incident happened in the 16100 block of Frederick Road.

Police said 35-year-old Gladis Loren Melendrez-Fuentes of Rockville died in the incident. She was a subcontractor at the trash transfer station, who sorted through yard waste and removed any garbage mixed in. 

While she was separating trash from yard waste Thursday afternoon, a load of yard waste was dumped on top of her.

Police said two other people were hurt in the incident.
