LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. -- A fitness tracking app along with information from the public led to an arrest in connection with an assault that happened on a bike trail in Loudoun County last month.
Loudoun County Sheriff's office said a cyclist assaulted another cyclist on the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) trail on April 22.
Officials said the suspect was using the STRAVA app in the area of the assault. Edward A. Shortnacy, 48, of Vienna was identified as the suspect.
The victim was reportedly riding his bike west on the W&OD Trail near Ashburn Village Boulevard and was trying to pass two bicyclists. He was riding on the center line when Shortnacy was coming from the opposite direction. Officials said the suspect stretched his arm out intentionally and hit the victim on his helmet. The victim fell to the ground and was seriously hurt. Shortnacy then rode off in the opposite direction.
The victim was taken to the hospital and then later released.
Shortnacy turned himself in Thursday morning and was then released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
