This weekend is a holiday weekend and the national gas price average of $2.97, the highest for Memorial Day since 2014. The penny pinchers are navigating online with their tips to save a few bucks on gas. Our Verify team separated the myths from what's actually going to save you money.

We went to experts at Cars.com, Gas Buddy and Triple-A Mid Atlantic to get to the truth. Here's some of the top three bits of advice we found being shared:

1. You get better mileage with your windows up. Our experts say - This is true. Doing this reduces the aerodynamic drag on the vehicle which means you use less gas, but since aerodynamics are more important at higher speeds, if you don't exceed 40 miles per hour, windows up or down doesn't make a difference.

2. Fuel additives and capsules give you better gas mileage and save you cash. Gas buddy told us this is false.

"Some of them are touted as being Nitrogen, there are other various additives that can help your car run cleaner and avoid deposits but over the course of 100 thousand miles those companies say those additives do a whole lot but to the average car it may not be worth the added price of some of those fuels," said Patrick DeHaan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy.

3. You can save on gas by fueling up on a specific day of the week. This one is true. Experts at AAA and GasBuddy both say in 21 states, you'll get the cheapest gas on Monday between 8-10 a.m., according to their latest March 2018 study. But you're avoid filling up on Friday, in 19 states, that's the most expensive day to do it.

So what day is the cheapest, most expensive to get gas in the DMV?

"Virginia, the best day to find gas is Sunday, in Maryland the best day is Tuesday, and in the District the best day is Wednesday," said Tom Calcagni to Verify researchers.
