USPS asks residents to clear snow off sidewalks so they can give you your mail

USPS is asking for the community's help so they can do their job and deliver mail.

WASHINGTON — USPS is asking you keep your walkways and sidewalks clear from snow so they can make sure you get your mail Wednesday.

The Postal Service's Capital and Northern Virginia District officials want to remind "residents the importance of keep their walkways, sidewalks, and approaches to mailboxes clear from snow and ice in the interest of neighborhood safety," a press release reads.

Postal officials say this will allow postal workers to deliver mail in a safe and timely matter but it will also help ensure that residents can travel safely in their neighborhoods.

Be sure to make sure your steps, porches, walkways and approaches from the street are cleared.

If you get your "mail delivered to roadside mailboxes, you should keep your approach to, and exit from, the mailbox clear of snow or any other obstacles." The mail deliverer should be able to get access to the mailbox without leaving their vehicle or backing up.

Also, the area near the mailbox should be cleared of snow in a "half-moon shape."
