Three locals have been named Rhodes scholars this year!

One of the scholars was from Maryland. Naomi Mburu became the first UMBC student to receive the prestigious scholarship, making history.

Two of the scholars are from northern Virginia: Matthew Chun of Arlington and Simone Askew of Fairfax.

Chun is a senior at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying mechanical engineering and management science. He is also captain of his school's wrestling team.

Askew is a senior studying international history major at the U.S. Military Academy.

Askew was the first black woman to lead the Corps of Cadets at West Point as First Captain, making history and garnering lots of media attention.

The Rhode Scholarships covers postgrad studies at Oxford University in England. There were 32 scholars chosen in the U.S. this year.
