The Metro Red Line is shut down between Silver Spring and Fort Totten and will keep the Takoma station closed until December 10.

Starting November 25 through December 10, Red line trains will not operate between Silver Spring and Fort Totten, according to WMATA. Takoma station will be closed for a major capital improvement project.

Officials said the work will involve replacing a mainline interlocking, which is a place where trains cross from one track to the other.

On December 2-3 the work will also include Glenmont in order to install radio communication cables and additional preventive maintenance. Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will also be closed.

Officials said that the project will also include replacing of rail ties, eliminating joints and installing new rails along the four-mile section of tracks.

There were will be fewer Red line trains during the project. Riders should allow for extra travel time.
