1 killed after fire sweeps through Suitland home

One person is dead after a fire swept through a home in Suitland.

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) — A man is dead after a fire swept through a home in Suitland.

According to a tweet from Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department, firefighters were called to the scene of a fire in the 4600 block of Brookfield Drive around 3:45 a.m. Once crews arrived on the scene they found smoke showing from a two-story duplex.

Brady says firefighters found the body of a victim during an initial search of the home. The body found was burned beyond recognition. His body was found in the same room where the fire started.

Officials said the fire started in one of the units of the duplex. Residents next door smelled smoke, heard the alarm and then called the fire department.

An investigation into the fire and the death is underway.

Preliminary fire loss is estimated at $2,500.
