Swim Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer

In Fairfax County, 60 kids swam for dear life. Not literally, but they are swimming for a vaccine that could prevent breast cancer.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- — A swim team in Fairfax County has taken part in a 3-4 mile swim to raise money and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Coalition's Artemis Project.

60 Shark Tank Racing Squad swimmers and friends from other area swim teams hosted a swim marathon as a part of a team-wide fundraiser to support the NBCC Artemis Project.

This year, their goal is to raise $30,000 and they ended up raising $32,000. Over the past 7 years, they have raised $170,000 in the fight against breast cancer and each year they work to support Britepaths , formerly Our Daily Bread, Complete the Circle event, the Arlington VFW, The Mission Continues, and numerous other charity and community service projects.

The Artemis Project is a program that has worked to end breast cancer. Basically, they are working to help fund vaccine trials for preventing breast cancer by 2020.

This is the eighth year the team has participated in the fundraising campaign to raise awareness.

The swimmers range in age from 8-18, and there are three adult coaches participating this year.

The children have learned facts about breast cancer and are spreading the word, taking general donations and pledges per lap.

The SHARK TANK Army of Love has their own fundraising page for online donations and information.
