Woman severely injured after being hit by car while trying to cross road in Rockville

Police shot and killed a family dog Sunday night in order to save its owner, officials said.

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A woman is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a car while trying to cross the road in Rockville Monday evening, Montgomery County police said.

The investigation shows that the woman was trying to cross Beall Avenue from Gibbs Street around 5:20 p.m. when a 2017 Dodge Charger going westbound hit her.

Police said the woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car was identified as a 24-year-old woman from Gaithersburg. She was not hurt in the crash.

Authorities reported several pedestrian related crashes throughout the area on Monday.
