WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Police are responding to Metro's Safe Track plan with a plan of their own by increasing security around five Metro stations.

As part of this new safety initiative, a huge light has been placed a few blocks from the Woodley Park Metro Station to illuminate dark corners so people feel safe waiting for ride shares when the Metro is closed.

In an effort to make riders feel safer, D.C. police are increasing security Wednesday-Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 a.m.

The following stations will have increased security:

  • Adam's Morgan
  • H Street
  • Chinatown
  • DuPont Circle
  • U Street

There are concerns about a rise in crime with Metro's SafeTrack underway. Many stations are closed and the entire rail system shuts down every night at midnight. Riders must find other ways to get home.
