OXON HILL, Md. -- The fun and games at the MGM National Harbor were dramatically interrupted when two children suffered injuries from electrical shock at the luxury resort and casino late Tuesday night.

Sources tell WUSA9 two children were on an outdoor patio near a fountain shortly before midnight when they touched a railing that had somehow become electrified.

The children's mother and an MGM security guard jumped into action to separate the kids from the electrical current. The first child was pulled quickly to safety. The security guard helped the mother rescue the second child, who was then passed to a Prince George's County Police officer who had responded to the scene to assist. The officer performed CPR on the child at the scene and during transport to a local hospital. The child was then flown to a trauma center in critical condition.

Officials did confirm in a tweet that the child in critical condition is a six-year-old girl.

The first child removed from the railing and the security guard also had to be taken to area hospitals for treatment, sources said.

So far there are no details available on what exactly caused the railing to become electrified. The area has since been closed to the public while crews work to determined what went wrong.

The Director of Communications for MGM National Harbor said they are aware of the incident and they are working with the Prince George's County Fire Department in the investigation.

"This is a horrible accident and we are heartbroken. We offer our support and prayers for the family," MGM National Harbor said in a statement sent to WUSA9.

"We are fully cooperating with the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department to investigate the incident that occurred at an outdoor area of our resort last night. That area has been closed to the public while investigators and our engineers conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation."
