Authorities have shut down a popular Prince George's County pet shop 5 years after the owner was cited for animal cruelty and neglect charges.

The Genesis Pet shop in Capitol Heights was served a cease and desist letter Monday from Prince George's County Animal Management Division.

A sign on the door of Genesis Pets reads "No animal sales at the moment. Thank you for your patience."

This store has been on investigators' radar since at least 2013.

Back in 2013, undercover investigators spotted a Rottweiler puppy who was lethargic and underweight, according to the SPCA. The puppy had greenish mucus coming from his eyes and nose. It was confiscated and the owner was fined and cited for animal cruelty and neglect charges.

However, the store remained open.

A few months later, store owner Louis McClam tried to regain custody of the puppy. Animal control denied his request.

We tried to reach McClam to ask him why the store was shut down and to hear his side of the story. He didn't come to the door.

WUSA9 has also reached out to multiple county officials to find out why the cease and desist letter was served this week. We are waiting to hear back.
