Substitute teacher at Silver Spring school charged with sexual abuse of a minor

Police said the incident at Cloverly Elementary School happened on March 8.

A substitute teacher at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor after inappropriately touching a student.

Police said Steven Katz, 59, of the 6500 block of Quiet Hours in Columbia, was charged after a preliminary investigation revealed that sometime after school on March 8, a student told his parent that his substitute teacher, identified as Katz, had inappropriately touched him at school that day.

Police said the parent notified Cloverly Elementary School administrators who then notified the authorities.

When interviewed by police, Katz admitted to inappropriately touching the student.

Police said Katz turned himself in to investigators after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

No information on Katz's bond is available at this time.

Detectives are requesting that parents whose children may have had contact with Katz discuss any interaction with the substitute teacher, and if they believe their child was victimized, to contact the Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) at 240-773-5400.
