Silver Spring student charged as an adult after bringing unloaded gun to school, police say

The gun was legally purchased and belonged to the student's father.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. -- A 17-year-old Montgomery County student was charged with possession of an unloaded firearm, among other offenses, on school property on Tuesday.

Solomon Hernderon, of Silver Spring, will be charged as an adult. Police say that on Tuesday shortly after 10:30 a.m. at Springbook High School in Silver Spring, school officials became aware that Henderson was in possession of a gun.

The School Resource Officer was notified and an unloaded .40 caliber handgun and empty magazine were found in Henderson’s bag.

Henderson was charged with possession of a handgun, possession of a firearm by a person under 21 years old, and possession of a firearm on school property.

At this time, no threat to students has been identified.

Investigation say the handgun was legally purchased and is registered to Henderson’s father.
