Metro Red Line delayed due to single-tracking between Friendship Heights and Van Ness

The Red Line has had a history of delays and track problems.

WASHINGTON — A reported track problem caused delays on the Metro's Red Line between Friendship Heights and Van Ness on Friday morning.

Metro officials said the train was single-tracking and there is a gap in the third rail. 

Trains were being delayed and running every 12 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont. There were also additional trains every six minutes between Glenmont & Farragut North. 

WMATA crews were at the scene investigating as they worked to fix the problem..

On Dec 16., the Red Line recently experienced track problems between Friendship Heights and Van Ness and it was also due to single tracking. 

The Red Line has had a history of train problems. The line was closed for an hour during the morning rush on Dec 10. after a reported track fire, the transit agency said. Metro service was stopped between Van Ness and Friendship Heights. Track insulators arced three times throughout the day, snarling service once during the morning rush and twice during the evening rush.  

Metro has said that they are working to permanently fix the electrical problems during a meeting of WMATA’s board of directors.
