14-year-old boy shot by stray bullet while playing video games, Prince George's County Police say

The Beltsville teen was taken to the hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

BELTSVILLE, Md. — A Prince George's County teenager is expected to survive after he was shot by a stray bullet while playing video games in his room Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. in the 4600 block of Marie Street in Beltsville, Maryland, according to the Prince George's County Police Department.

Investigators said the 14-year-old boy, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was in stable condition in the hospital as of Friday afternoon, according to Corporal Kyndle Johnson, a spokesperson for Prince George's County Police

The victim's home is near the Little Paint Branch Park. Preliminary circumstances indicate the home where the victim was struck by gunfire was not the target of the shooting. Investigators found a number of spent shell casings in a parking lot about 200 yards away from the victim's house, according to park visitors who witnessed detectives documenting evidence there.

"I just heard a loud pow, like a gunshot," neighbor Ronnie Booth said. "Even if it was something random ... it could have hit any one of our houses.”

No arrests or suspects have been announced. Anyone who may have information about this most-recent shooting incident should contact Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.

The shooting is the second incident in three months where a child has been struck by a bullet, while inside a home in Prince George's County.

Eight-year-old P.J. Evans was shot and killed on Aug. 24 while playing video games in his aunt's apartment in Landover. Three men were arrested and charged in what appeared to be a retaliatory shooting aimed at people outside the apartment. Investigators said Evans was not targeted.

Evans' death sparked outrage in the community and calls to end gun violence.

In the wake of Friday's wounding of a 14-year-old in Beltsville, Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks called for cooperation with police.

“The depravity and violence we are seeing across the country, and in our community, must stop," Alsobrooks said. "Our children should not have to fear gun violence in this community and in their homes due to poor decisions of adults. As our Police Department investigates this shooting, we are asking the community to please come forward with any information that can help us close this case, so we can ensure whoever committed this terrible act of violence can be taken off our streets."
