Pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by Montgomery Co. police cruiser

Police say the northbound and southbound lanes of George Avenue and Arcola Avenue in Wheaton, Md. are closed down in both direction due to the accident.

WHEATON, Md. -- A pedestrian was struck by a police cruiser in Montgomery County, Md. on Thursday night, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

The accident happened in the area of Georgia Avenue and Arcola Avenue in Wheaton, Md. around 9:30 p.m. Fire officials say the pedestrian, who has only been identified as a man, was seriously injured as a result of the accident.

Police say it appears that the man was trying to cross the street at the time of the accident. The officer driving the police cruiser was not on an emergency call. Police say the officer was on routine patrol.

At this time, it is unclear if the man was crossing the street in a crosswalk.

Police say the northbound and southbound lanes of George Avenue and Arcola Avenue were closed down in both directions due to the accident.

No further information has been released at this time.
