DERWOOD, Md. -- A 24-year-old man was arrested Friday for trying to rape a female worker inside an apartment complex, police say.
Montgomery County police have arrested and charged Joao B. Rodrigues, of Gaithersburg with attempted second-degree rape.
The incident occurred on November 30 when police said they were called to The Daley Apartments in the 8000 block of Gramercy Boulevard for the report of an attempted rape.
According to a police report, a man came up to the woman in the first-floor hallway near the bathrooms and told her the men's bathroom did not have paper towels.
The victim went into the men's bathroom and the man followed behind and grabbed her.
Police said the victim escaped and called police. Surveillance photos of the suspect were later released to the public.
On Friday, officers said they observed a man matching the surveillance photos walking in the area of Crabbs Branch Way and Shady Grove Road. The man then entered the same apartment complex and bathrooms where police said the attempted rape occurred.
Officers identified Rodrigues as the suspect and took him into custody. Rodrigues told police he had been inside the apartment building before to use the bathroom.
Police transported Rodrigues to the Central Processing Unit where he will be held without bond.
